Now I know that Amiga news and software is scarce these days, but does
this mean that we have to pay =A35.99 for a "cutdown, diet, slimline,
comic" issue?
As I remember, Commodore Format went EXACTLY the same way and then
disappeard within a few months. PLEASE don't let this happen to Amiga
Format.
To tell you the truth, I have not purchased the current issue due to
the fact that I feel I am paying =A35.99 for nothing!
This is a VERY sad day for Amiga users :(

Well yesterday I got a very nice phonecall! :)) Almost a week later bar
a day; the cheque arrived! :)) Whew, just about to cancel the cheque an
all! :)
Thanks everyone for helping me through this difficult time ;) :)

Ooooh, nifty A600, I'm gonna do the same with my A600 (all the bits are
ordered and are one the way! :) and use it as a portable Amiga and Mac
(Fusion! :)

But make sure you keep the A600 with all the gear; stick it in a
briefcase and you have a portable Miggy... Like me :) Now all I need
is a CD-ROM, maybe a Reno Mediavision iirc or a slimline power
computing one... :)
I do have an A1240T btw... :)
All the best,
Nick.

I agree, I still have my 128D and C64 with loads of loads of stuff.
I even logon to the internet to access BBS sites and it works like a

Well, I'm so glad to see that your helping Amiga Format *stay* in the
current market, Amiga Format, along with Amiga Active *BOTH* need your
support, Neither of them have lots of stuff to fill the pages with, Yet, =
if
you want to support the Amiga, and help nuture its future, you have to
support the grass root efforts that Amiga magazines provide.

Its a sadder day when ben and co have to go sign on, just because you don=
t
think the amount of work they do is 'worth' the money. I bet they do alot=
more than you do to keep things going. I can guess they break their balls=
every day to bring the very best they can, Same for Amiga Active.

Rich won't be able to - he wasn't here then. It's probably down to any one
of several factors - Cathy likes a lot of salad stuff, she's easily
frightened, she's got 400 children, she stands in front of oncoming cars...

Yes, it does. It can also do passive ftp between ftp sites (none of that
copying a file to your hard drive to have to copy it back out again to a

I use wc, which shows the number of lines, words and characters. It's
part of GeekGadgets, so it probably needs ixemul.library.

Yes, do not feel intimidated by this language barrier or anything, we
are glad to have a new afb recruit and I for one jope you find this a
very helpful resource like so many others do. I guess my English is
pretty bad when it compares to that of of non native English speakers.
Personally, I am not at all able to speak in Polish, though I am quite
good in my French and Italian and little German... :)
Have Fun! :)

With the GB keymap you get ' by hitting the key at the top-left of the
keyboard marked with a ` and ~. To get a backtick, you hit alt+`.

That's so true Mark. I pay =A35.99 for AF each month, it's 80 odd pages
and it has a CD. PC Format is two and half times as big, two cds if
iirc, for =A34.99. But consider that the quality of PC Format is rubbish
IMO compared to the hard graft Ben, Rich, the freelancers put into AF.
For =A36 this month you get a PC and Macintosh emulator, both of
extremely high calibre. AF is worth anybody's money because despite it
being as Ben describes '98% page free'; it still contains as much as it
ever has done really in the past year or two. Ben's problem is
advertising, the lack of. The magazine's size largely depends on
Advertsing revenue. If the Magazine is bigger; it's representitive of
the amount of adverts. Consider that you also get extremely high
production values from a dedicated editorial team; AF is a role model
for other magazines of any genre.
The fact is the Amiga market it sick; and there are very few products
released with a dire lack of software; but a deluge of hardware. One
word, Piracy and also development time and cost.
I personally applaud Ben and Rich and the whole team; because without
their dedication it's quite likely AF would have closed by now.
Besides, I like the new look; it's much better with a stapled binding
and the whole thingy in general. If and when AF gets more adverts and
products to actually increase in size; I suggest it stays with the
staple binding, which i like much more... :)

AmigActive and Amiga Format needs everybodies support; no matter the
size of the magazine, the real gems are the writing content, which is
asorbing, entertaining, informative and an authoritive reference. Ben,
Rich et al are the people which need our support; if you're going to
take the attituide that standards have fell because the size of the
magazine is smaller; then you could not be further from the truth...
Keep up the OUTSTANDING and DEDICATED work, that's ALL the AF team...
All the best,
Nick.

Anyway, I'm now back online (biggest bummer about hospital) and have plenty

Entirely your choice, I just picked it up and bought
it as usual (and I don't even use an Amiga these
days!), I didn't even really notice much difference,
wasn't too keen on the card-CD cover though, but no
big problem, just the card tore when I removed the
tape.

The way I see it is that the CD alone is worth the 6,
an Aminet CD would cost you around a tenner, and
theres much more on the AFCDs and reader contributions
and all the rest. The mag is still a good read, just
two less drinks in the club on a Friday night innit?!

I've heard that one before :)
But AF is still a wicked read, better than ever I
think, I enjoy it as much now as did back in the day
(1992 era), and as I said I haven't used an Amiga for
months, but I still buy the two mags, reading them
keeps me in touch with what's going on, and 6 a month
'aint too much to ask is it? I mean what's that?
1.50 a week? C'mon!

I think I`ve just come across a pireted version of OS3.5.
Take a look at this UAE site: www.amiga.2y.net/uae.html.
It is stored in a ADF hardfile.
Im not sure what I can really do about stopping the piracy of this
software but those of you in the know might be able to. The piracy of
1.3-OS3.1 can not be stopped as it is spread far and wide but the
piracy of OS3.5 must stop and not be allowed to spread.

You really have to get your priorities sorted out :) Mind you I seem to spend
half my time taking the wife to casualty. Since Xmas left wrist broken in two
places after a fall. Two weeks later right wrist broken after she tripped,
and last night chipped a bone in her elbow when she slipped on the stairs and
tried to prevent more damage to her wrists. All this and I AM the one who is

Heh heh. I used to have this problem. Pain in the arse it is. I think
it has something to do with the buffered interface, because when it is
plugged into a PowerFlyer, it ejects straight away.
You could try running th 'Eject' program which is supplied with IDEFix.
Just drag'n'drop the Zip onto the appicon, and it usually ejects
straight away. Sorry, but no other fixs for you.

Well, someone has to pay their expenses. You'll notice there ain't much in
terms of advertising, and the companies that do advertise are for the most
part Amiga dealers. Amiga dealers don't rake in the bucks, you know, so they
can't afford to pay a lot for advertising.
It's all about advertising, my friend. That's why here in the States you can
pick up an issue of Vogue for only $3 or $4, and that thing is HUGE -- about
the size of a year's worth of Amiga Formats stacked. But when you actually
look at it, it has no more editorial content than Amiga Format. Who pays for
the extra pages? ADVERTISERS.
Take it from someone in the magazine biz.

Oh but it is, you could in fact if you had seven Zorro Slots 16 IDE
channels with a master and slave giving 32 IDE devices in theory! :)
Something called a Power Flyer 4000 or Buddha IDE will add lots of IDE
interfaces.. :)

No idea myself, but if the hardfile containing MacOS 7.5.3 (or point
something) that Ben hinted at in AF 134 is included I'll be a happy man.
I currently spend a lot of my time running Shapeshifter under system 7.0
(thanks again Nick Lamburn for all your help) and installing MacOS can be a

Do you have a custom LCD screen fitted t it, or do you just plug it
into a monitor when you want to use it? If this is the case (heh heh!)
it is more of a luggable Amiga than a portable. ;)

Currently I have A power tower with a 200w power supply and at the
moment even the power led strugles to come to life.
On my current power supply it does show that the 12v line is carrying
7amps and on a 250w power supply it carries 9amps on the 12v line. So
is it worth trying a 250w ps just to get my powerled back if nothing

Each Bhudda card has 3 IDE interfaces, 6 devices. So you could run a

Hi Jon,
-> Is that a big grin because you know, or because it`s a hellofa proggy?
-> Or both?
Both! I know, because I'm the AFCD compiler and I put it on the CD this
morning, and it's also "a hellofa proggy" ;-)
-> Jon, wandering if you`ve signed a NDA
Come to think of it, I haven't! ;-)
So technically I'm not bound to a legal agreement am I? I'm probably going
to face the "Wrath of Vost" for this but... wait for it... it's a program
and it works on Amigas! ;-)
Don't worry guys, I've just sent the AFCD51 masters off today so you won't have
to wait long now... ;-)
best regards,
Errol

a) too big and expensive
b) GP haven't kicked the bucket yet
c) Ben wouldn't let it because it'd hurt 3.5 sales

This wont help. Its the voltage drop across the resistance of the tracks of
the motherboard thats causing the problem (V=I/R) and that'll be the same no
matter what wattage PSU you stick on the input side. The only solution is to
inject power on the PPC board itself - but you need to put it through a
filter to stop it getting electrical noise from the rest of your system.
We make a suitable filtered adapter BTW.

Is this the same adaptor that is little more than a couple of wires tied
onto a ferrite ring, for which I was charged =A315 at WoA?
Personally I have found no noticable improvement on my A1200 with BVision
and PPC/040 with the addition of this equipment, which is unfortunate but
might be related to my system only=2E
By the way, are these items still =A315?

What you do is write an e-mail about the illegal software, and send it to
both amiga.com and the owners of the website, plus the hostmasters of the
domain (eg. hostmaster@2y.net or postmaster@2y.net etc).

Delete the pointer.prefs and palette.prefs from ENVARC:Sys and reboot
and then see if that cures it!
Also check for patches in user-startup and WBStartup that no longer work

Which mailing list will they be on? And anyway, if Future's mail server is

going on, is he?

It wasn't about "spam and so on" - it was a question about what a particular
error message means. Seems to me like a valid question to ask on this
list under the circumstances. Perhaps we need some clarification on what is
and is not on-topic for this list? Are questions about problems people are
having with their Amigas on-topic? After all, they aren't questions about
Amiga Format...
> Thirdly, the ISP we're currently using is crap.
Why are Future using a crap ISP (if that's not an off-topic question)?
Surely a big company like Future can afford to use a decent ISP?
Martin.

Well, I took that into heavy consideration. What I did was just save all the
Final Writer stuff in Rich Text Format, then I loaded into MS Word at work.
The "word count" option has a character count, both with and without spaces;
I'm charging for "without." :)
Besides, if you charge by words -- especially when doing a scientific paper
[which I'm NOT, btw] -- some of those words can be long-ass words,
especially when there's a list of 'em...that can be kinda,
well..."inconvenient."
[Besides...as I'm typing this, the guy whom I'm doing this for is in the
office. He asked me how much I owe him so far, and I gave him a figure based
on how much my supervisor said I should charge him per character. I said "Is
this too much?" And he basically said "Hell, no! That's time you've spent!"
and he happily wrote out a check...]

I regularly drop jaws at school when I type some text on the screen then hit
tab to make the colours cycle, they never knew amigas had that much
power.... no really... Should've seen them when I showed them my rendered

Nope not at alL, although you failed to mention what else is plugged in///

Does it flash brightly and dimly when you boot up? Its supposed to do that.
take everything out and it'll still blink at you
The problem is that its trying to draw all the power via the mobo, what you
need is the fix which draws power straight from the powerpack rather than
via your 1200. have a look on aminet and there should be a fair few
document about saying how to do it
